Gina Rodriguez and Zachery Levi are gearing up to join the Spy Kids franchise as official cast members in the upcoming Netflix film.
The news was officially confirmed by Deadline, and the much-awaited reboot is in full swing.
The original Spy Kids movie premiered in 2001, receiving critical acclaim and a big box office draw.

Due to its popularity, three additional sequels were made following the first movie’s premiere.
The Chuck alum is no stranger to the action genre – he starred in the action film, Shazam (2019), and portrayed Fandral in Thor: The Dark World (2013).
Known for her character in CW’s Jane The Virgin, Gina has touched waters in various genres, such as sci-fi in Annihilation (2018) with Natalie Portman.
She was also cast in the action film, Deepwater Horizon (2016), working alongside Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell.
Beloved franchise: The two actors have dabbled in the action genre before, and can easily portray characters in the next Spy Kids installment
The premise of the reboot follows the children of the world’s greatest secret agents who accidently unleash a computer virus that gives its develop total control of all technology, according to Deadline.
This then leads to the children to become spies to save not only their parents, but the entire world.
Robert Rodriguez, the original creator and director of Spy Kids, will be making a grand return to not only direct the reboot, but also write and produce the movie.
The first Spy Kids film was released in theaters in 2001, and starred Alexa PenaVega, Daryl Sabara, Antonio Banderas, and Carla Gugino.

The film was a huge success, drawing in around $ 147 million in the box office. The second film, Spy Kids: The Island Of Lost Dreams (2002) made $ 119 million with the third sequel, Spy Kids: Game Over (2003) making more with $ 197 million.
The fourth film, Spy Kids: All The Time In The World (2011) had a different leading cast with Jessica Alba and Joel McHale, with Alexa and Daryl having much smaller roles.
The franchise became a beloved family favorite through the years, and a reboot was looming on the horizon for some time.

In an interview with Insider to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Spy Kids last year, Alexa opened up about working on the franchise for so many years.
She also discussed why she believed the movies had such a big impact and explained how they were, ‘the first of its kind.’
‘They didn’t have movies like Spy Kids, where the kids were really the ones that were in charge, and they were doing something awesome and amazing,’ the Sleepover actress said.
On the topic if she would ever join the cast once again if a reboot was made, Alexa only had one thing to say in response. ‘Oh my Gosh. Yes. Yes. ‘
The star also added, ‘But it’s been so many years that are you kidding? In a heartbeat. And I know Daryl would say the same. Like in a heartbeat we would both be there. ‘

During Collider’s Comic-Con @ Home Directors On Directing panel, creator Rodriguez, talked about how it was hard at first to get the studio on board with the lead family being Latin.
Fellow filmmaker, Colin Trevorrow, who has worked on films such as Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), also weighed in on his thoughts about the power of the Spy Kids films.
‘You see that any kid can watch that movie and they enjoy that movie. For those who are Latin in particular, it means so much to them. It changes their whole future about what is possible, ‘he stated.
